Places to Get Married in Devon | Barn, Beach & Exclusive Use Venues

Devon is one of the most popular counties in England for weddings, and it is easy to see why. Dartmoor, the South Hams coastline, the Exe Estuary, rolling farmland, dramatic cliffs - the landscape gives couples an extraordinary range of settings to work with.

But with a large number of venues comes a genuine challenge: narrowing down the options into something manageable. This guide is designed to help. It covers the main types of venue available in Devon, the key questions worth asking at each one, and what to think about before you start visiting.

The main types of wedding venue in Devon

Devon's venue landscape broadly divides into a handful of categories. Understanding which one suits you best will save a lot of time in the search.

Country house and estate venues are the most traditional option - typically a listed building with formal gardens, a licensed ceremony room, and a reception space. They often include on-site accommodation and have a long-established wedding operation. Good for couples who want structure, in-house catering, and a classic countryside setting.

Barn venues are one of the most searched-for options in Devon, and the county has some excellent ones. A converted agricultural barn typically offers exposed beams, natural materials, high ceilings and a relaxed, rural atmosphere that is harder to achieve in a formal hotel or manor. Most barn venues are dry hire or semi-dry hire, meaning you bring your own caterers and suppliers.

Coastal and clifftop venues range from converted fishing cottages to clifftop marquee sites to farmhouses within walking distance of the sea. Devon's coastline means there are genuine options for couples who want the sea to be part of their day, either as a backdrop or as an actual ceremony location.

Hotels and restaurants offer a more urban or town-centre option, with full in-house catering and less logistical complexity. Good for smaller guest lists, evening-only celebrations, or couples who prefer a more relaxed approach to planning.

Outdoor and licensed open-air venues are a growing category, particularly in Devon, where many private estates and coastal fields now hold civil ceremony licences for outdoor ceremonies. The right weather cannot be guaranteed, but the best outdoor venues have well-considered covered alternatives.

Key questions to ask any venue

Before you visit, it is worth getting clear on a few things that will shape the day more than the venue photographs:

Is the venue exclusively yours? Some venues run multiple events on the same day. If that matters to you - and for many couples it matters a great deal - exclusive use should be a firm requirement rather than a preference.

What does the ceremony licence cover? Not all licensed venues have outdoor or coastal ceremony permissions. If you want a garden or beach ceremony, confirm specifically that it is licensed rather than assuming.

What is included in the hire? Barn and dry hire venues give you maximum flexibility but require you to source all suppliers independently. Hotel venues often include catering and coordination but give you less freedom. Neither is better - it depends on how much control you want.

How does accommodation work? If you want close family on site for a weekend celebration, check whether on-site accommodation is included or available nearby. A venue that sleeps 14 feels very different from one where everyone leaves at midnight.

What are the logistics on the day? Parking, noise restrictions, end times, and setup access all affect how the day actually runs.

What makes South Devon particularly good for weddings

The South Hams - the area south of Dartmoor and running to the coast between Plymouth and Torbay - is one of the best parts of Devon for weddings. It has the soft, golden light that photographers love, a dramatic coastline within easy reach of inland venues, genuinely excellent food and accommodation options in nearby towns like Salcombe, Kingsbridge and Dartmouth, and a relaxed, unhurried atmosphere that tends to rub off on the days themselves.

It is also an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, which means the landscape is protected and the setting for almost any venue here is genuinely special.

The Grain Store: exclusive use barn and coastal venue near Kingsbridge

The Grain Store is an exclusively yours wedding venue near Kingsbridge in the South Hams. The whole property - barn, farmhouse, walled garden, courtyard and coastal ceremony field - is yours from Friday 3pm until Monday 10am.

The barn seats up to 150 guests and has three licensed ceremony locations: the barn itself, the walled garden, and a beach field at Beesands on the Start Bay coast. Most couples use the weekend format to arrive on Friday, celebrate on Saturday, and spend Sunday together before heading home on Monday.

As a dry hire venue, there is no locked-in caterer or standard package. You choose every supplier yourself, which means the celebration reflects your tastes rather than a house menu.

The farmhouse sleeps 14 across seven bedrooms, which means close family can stay on site across the whole weekend.

How to narrow down the shortlist

Once you have a broad idea of the type of venue you want, the most useful thing you can do is visit in person. Photographs are good, but the atmosphere of a venue - how it feels to walk into, how the scale works, how the staff communicate - is very hard to judge from a screen.

Most venues will offer a viewing appointment. It is worth visiting two or three before you commit, even if you are already fairly certain about one.

Take note of how responsive the venue is in the lead-up to your visit. A venue team that is prompt, clear, and genuinely helpful during the enquiry stage is usually a sign of how the relationship will feel during the planning period.
